About Panauti

Panauti is a small town located 32 km Southeast of Kathmandu in the central regions of Nepal. Panauti was known as Panchal desh, Punyamatinagar, Punanti, Punyawati, Palaati in the past and later known as Panauti/ Panti. It is also known as Uttar Prayag because of its religious importance. Panauti is a typical Newari town located at the confluence of two rivers Roshi and Punyamati. It is also believed that a third invisible river Lilawati, which is believed to be only visible to seers, converges at the confluence making trijunction called triveni ghat, a sacred Hindu place.

The history of Panauti dates back to Satya Yuga. Indra, the king of gods once became very attracted towards exquisite beauty Ahilya, wife of sage Gautam rishi. The newly married couple made a humble abode for themselves at the bank of a river near a place called Brahmapuri in modern Janakpur district. In absence of Gautam rishi, Indra in the disguise of sage Gautam rishi made love with Ahilya. Later Gautam rishi caught both of them making love which made him very angry and cursed Ahilya to turn into rock. He also cursed Indra to have thousands of sores and female external genitalia in body which disfigured his body. In advice of teacher Brihaspati, Indra and Indrayani, wife of King Indra worshipped Mahadev and Parvati for twelve years at Triveni ghat, Panauti which pleased them and absolved of his sins and Mahadev was renowned as Indreswor Mahadev. Because of exemption of Indra’s sins at Panauti, it became a holy place for hindu.

Various evidences like stones, coins and scripture from Khopasi shows that there was settlement at Panauti along with nearby places like Banepa, Dhulikhel since Kiranti period. Though there are few evidences from Lichhavi period, the scripture at Khopasi dated 655 B.S. from then King Shivdev I also proved that it was important place during that time. Amshuverma, the renowned king of Lichhavi period is believed to be born nearby Khopasi.

The Malla Dynasty was the ruling dynasty of Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, from the 12th to the 18th century with Ari Deva (1201-1216 AD) as the first ruler of the Kathmandu valley. At that time only the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding region was known as Nepal or Nepal Mandala and the citizens were known as Nepa:mi (in Newari). After the death of Jayasthiti Malla’s grandson Yaksha Malla in 1482, the Kathmandu Valley was divided up among his sons into three kingdoms of Bhaktapur (Bhadgaon), Kathmandu (Kantipur) and Patan (Lalitpur). Before Jitamitra Malla (1673–1696), king of Bhaktapur Panauti was semi independent principality during the Malla period. There was direct and indirect influence from kings of Bhaktapur – Jagajjyoti Malla (1613–1637), Naresha Malla (1637–1644), Jagat Prakasha Malla (1644–1673), Jitamitra Malla (1673–1696), Bhupatindra Malla (1696–1722), and Ranajit Malla (1722–1769). Panauti is a historical city which was originally a small state given by King Bhupatindra Malla (1696-1722) as a dowry to his sister. Panauti was mentioned as one of the seven principalities under Bhaktapur of then Saatgaon (Banepa, Panauti, Nala, Dhulikhel, Chaukot, Saanga, and Shreekhandapur).

In 1763(1820 B.S. Kartik 11), then king of Shah dynasty Prithvi Narayan Shah annexed Panauti to the larger and greater Nepal following victory over Dhulkhel a day before. Ram krishna Kunwar was given the charge for that task. After 3 days, the other states of Saatgaon merged into the greater Nepal.

From 1991 to the end of the 1990s, Panauti Integrated Project, a programme of cooperation financed counterpart fund of French food assistance enabled the complete renovation of a number of religious monuments and historical buildings of Panauti, the cleansing of the old town through a network of sewers, and the building of several schools. Some one hundred-fifty unskilled local workers were recruited to complete these renovation and construction projects.

Panauti is historical, religious, cultural, and archeological important city with possibility of tourism. It is believed that Panauti city stands in the single rock which made this city unaffected by the major devastating earthquakes of 1943 and 25 April 2015. Panauti municipality was established on 24th January,1997 with merging of Panauti, Malpi, Sunthan,Taukhal, Subbagaon, and Khopasi Village development committee.
